For the past two years Lauren has been the Consumer Advocate at a homeless shelter under Henry Street Settlement in the Lower East Side for women who have severe mental illness. Lauren assists this unique group of women in obtaining government benefits and entitlements as well as the different forms of IDs that will allow them to be ready for housing.

Since college, Lauren has had wonderful opportunities to explore the spectrum of nonprofit work. Lauren was in an Americorps-funded program called Public Allies, where she began her career as a community organizer working in East Harlem public housing around issues of policing with a group of concerned mothers.

Lauren graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Spanish. Lauren is originally from Washington Heights, New York, grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and currently lives in Brooklyn.

She is honored to be a member of the National Urban Fellows Class of 2016 and hopes to have an impact on our country’s future generations.
