SELECTION PROCESS
Selection as a National Urban Fellow is based on a combination of criteria including strong personal character, the highest standard of work ethic and integrity, self-discipline, and a positive attitude with a passion for equity and social justice. In addition, the selection process requires:
- A background of 5-7 years in a management or administrative capacity
- Demonstrated leadership skills with potential for further growth
- A demonstrated commitment to public service
National Urban Fellow candidates are recruited through a nationwide outreach campaign. The selection of Fellows is a highly competitive process: several hundred applications are submitted each year for 40-50 Fellowships. Throughout the process, deliberative care is taken to make certain that the most talented and promising candidates are identified.
A specialized NUF Screening Committee reviews applications for outstanding candidates and recommends them to the Interviewing Committee. The Interviewing Committee conducts a rigorous selection based on submitted documents and both personal and group interviews. The committees comprise National Urban Fellows' board members, Alumni, Mentors, and Baruch College faculty.
