GENERAL INFORMATION
- What is the National Urban Fellows program?
The National Urban Fellows Program is one of the country's top leadership development programs. Founded in 1969, the program was established to counter the under-representation of people of color and women in leadership positions. The NUF leadership development program further prepares multiethnic, multicultural women and men for leadership and public service. Fellows spend 14 months in a full-time graduate program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship, leading to a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City University of New York's Bernard M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs.

NUF Fellows are also expected to give back, supporting the organization that supported them, through ongoing engagement and involvement including annual giving and support.

- How are mentorships assigned?
Each year Mentors must be recruited for the current class. Therefore, every class will have a different set of Mentors. Mentors interview as many Fellows in the class as possible in order to develop a list of preferred candidates to be assigned to their organization. Ultimately, the Program Director is responsible for assigning Fellows to their mentor assignments. However, the needs of Mentors and Fellows are carefully assessed in order to provide the best experience for both.
- Can my present employer serve as my Mentor?
While it is not common, if a company wishes to sponsor an individual we may be able to accommodate this request. Our main goal is to ensure that the mentorship assignment will provide the Fellow with a set of experiences in an environment that is different from his or her present employment.
- What are the mentorship assignments for the current class?
Please see the Mentors' Profiles section, which lists the Mentors for the current class.
- Does relocation always occur and is it mandatory?
In almost every case, relocation does occur and is required. On a few occasions (very few), Fellows are offered mentorship sites in their home city or state. This is more often the exception than the rule.
